Watering Guidelines

New Installation Watering: New installations should be watered immediately after planting. It is important to keep new plantings and young plants well-watered as their root system has not fully developed. New plants will require care. A no-maintenance garden does not exist. Only low-maintenance. Watering is essential. Be sure to move the hose to reach all plants. Plants will not survive without supplemental water.

You can use our watering guidelines to help determine when and how much to water.

Trees and Shrubs

When watering trees and shrubs, it is crucial to soak the root system. To properly water, we recommend setting up a hose to slowly drip at the base of the plant for an hour to the full depth of the root ball. This ensures that the water will go deeply into the soil and the roots will have healthy growth.

Deeply water once per week; more when hot and dry.

Perennials

Week 1-4: Water 1” of water, 2x per week, more if hot and dry.

Thereafter:  1” of water per week, natural or supplemental. If plants do not receive adequate water, they will die. Water more if hot and dry.

Sod

Sod is extremely perishable and is not guaranteed after installation. Water deeply daily. Mow after 5 days at highest blade height. Stay off sod to avoid ruts.

Weeks 1-3: Water daily until soil under sod is wet, not soaked.  Sod cannot be allowed to dry out. Be sure to water edges.

Weeks 3-8: Water 2-3 times a week. Sod can perish in hot temps and a daily assessment will need to determine if watering is needed.

Ongoing watering requirements: 1” water weekly. More if hot and dry.
